New HSE website puts 'business case' for health and safety at work
22/02/05
The HSE has launched a campaign to persuade businesses that sensible health and safety management is not only beneficial for staff, but good for their bottom line as well. The national advertising campaign will be backed up with a new website - Better Business .
The website contains case studies backing up the HSE's claim:
As a result of the improved relationship with management in one workplace Union representatives were given the opportunity to work closely with management to improve safety culture. They worked hard to ensure that ownership of health and safety is seen as everyone?s business.
Tangible business benefits included
Effective 40% reduction in production unit costs and improvements in equipment reliability during a period of staff reductions (60% of workforce)
Reduction in insurance claims, from over 50 in 1997 to zero in 2002
Greater accountability in internal projects, particularly in capital investments made to the site
Improved trust and reputation in local community
Improved staff morale ? absence rates were reduced from 10% to 2.5% of staff
