Work-related road incidents reportable as Industrial Accidents?
08/06/05
Against a background that there as many as 1,000 road deaths and 13,000 serious injuries a year involving people who were at work at the time The Motorists' Forum was asked by the Department for Transport to look at the issue of Work-Related Road Safety and advise on how companies can be encouraged and helped to raise their road safety standards.
The Forum has now issued it?s report Improving Work Related Safety in which it recommends that a requirement for employers to report serious incidents relating to on-the-road work activities under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR) should be introduced.
Whilst the Forum noted that as from 1 March 2005 users of goods vehicles engaged in delivering or collecting required to wear seatbelts if travelling more than 50 metres the Forum further noted that there were exemptions in place which could undermine a road safety culture.
